In a nutshell, depression is the state of mind that reflects one's disappointment, frustration and hopelessness at things or situations. It literally results in loss of joy that can linger for so long if not dealt with. Outlined below are practical steps I have taken (at different points in time) to deal with depression.
1. Read the Bible and pray: More than you may ever know, reading the Bible (if you are a Christian) and praying will ignite courage and hope in you to face the future, amidst all odds. Through prayer, you communicate your “hopelessness” to God and give Him the privilege to intervene in your life situations. It helps you understand that because God is alive, you can face tomorrow, no matter your past.
2. Read and listen to inspirational materials: Reading and listening to inspirational materials will often give you a positive lift from any low level of depression you may find yourself. These inspirational materials include books by great authors, CDs and DVDs by pastors and great men of inspiration/motivation. In addition, you can get inspiration from inspirational sites on the internet such as this inspirational blog of mine (www.lifemeditation.org)
3. Engage in thanksgiving and praise: Depression often leads to murmurings and complaints but engaging in thanksgiving and praise to God at such times usually melts away your depression. So, your best bet in your moments of depression is to tune your mind to give thanks to God for all things (both the ones you understand and the ones you don’t) and in all things. This, you do by filling your heart with soul-inspiring songs and melodies. Before long, you'll find hope rising in you and courage to face the future.
I believe that as you put these simple but important keys to work in your moments of depression, you will begin to experience significant victory over depression. So, I charge you: Stay above depression!
There are more ways or steps to handling depression than I listed above for lack of space and time. Would you like to share your opinion on this subject with other readers, as a comment?
