Have you ever wondered why some people don’t want to do business with Christians? It’s either because they have been victimized by a deal gone sour or they have heard about shaky deals that have affected others. Christians these days have earned a reputation in the world for being undependable and lacking in character.
We have all heard, at one time or the other, horrible stories of people who hired a contractor to do repairs or remodeling in their homes and who were left in the lurch when the contractor disappeared, down payment in hand, without completing the work. What about the tales of Christians who break their promises, don’t pay their bills and cheat on their taxes. Some believers have become so disillusioned while doing business with Christians that they left their churches or worse still, their faith.
The ‘little fox’ in Christendom” is the vice in Christianity (among Christians) that makes Christians unworthy of trust and credibility in the society. In summary, this little fox in Christendom is the lack of integrity on the part of believers or Christians. This vice, however, is set to wreck havoc to our reputation as Christ’s followers and therefore, needs to be taken off. Outlined below are 3 important ways of overcoming this vice:
1. Think twice before making promises: As Christ’s representatives on earth, we need to begin to live what we read from the book – the Bible. All the gifts and anointing in the world won’t make up for a lack of character. Character is best described as the sum total of moral qualities associated with a person and suggests ethical strength and excellence. Character is about doing what is right, regardless of what is convenient or popular. It comprises the core principles and values of who we really are, both inwardly and outwardly, in our behaviors and relationships with people. In relating with people, therefore, we need to learn to think twice before making promises, especially if we know we often experience a challenge with meeting up with people’s demand. This may be a good start point for the display of worthy character.
2. Be open (sincere) and truthful in your business dealings: Qualities such as faithfulness, honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, loyalty, honor, dependability and even good old-fashioned manners are basic to good character. But because so few Christians exhibit these traits these days, there is a huge credibility gap between society and the church today. Many non-Christians consider Christians a bunch of hypocrites, and the sad truth is that in many instances, they are right.
3. Don’t be extremely “money-conscious”: Instead of being extremely “money-conscious in your business dealings with people, be God-conscious. This means that you should portray and reflect your Christian virtues, even in your business dealings with people. Being extremely “money-conscious” will make you fall into so many evil vices, thereby losing the real focus of your dealings with people. Our primary focus even in business, as Christians, is to win the lost for the Lord. However, they don’t listen to us most times, because they see the glaring inconsistency between our message and our lifestyle as Christians. It gets so bad that some Christians don’t even get along with other believers in business, because of a contract breach at one point or the other. This is one of the effects of this little fox in Christendom and it is terribly sad.
The time for change is NOW! Let’s decide to make the change necessary. Our work must begin to match our walk! Stay in total victory over the little fox in Christendom!
